Creating and maintaining balance is perhaps the most challenging struggle single parents face. We often battle with financial strain, guilt, fatigue, and social isolation. In order to create a happy life for our family, it is imperative that we create financial autonomy, empower ourselves daily. and develop self-care rituals.
Empowerment and Autonomy
When I became a single mother, I was overwhelmed! I had to learn to manage a family on one income, plan for activities, deal with uncooperative co-parents, and create a healthy environment for my children to grow. I was often frustrated and felt defeated!

Over time, I stopped relying on my co-parents in a financial sense because it was too difficult to maintain a budget with inconsistent child support payments. I realized that in order to be successful I had to:

Maintain my mental health to manage the guilt I was feeling about separating from my children's fathers

Learn to budget, maintain good credit, and make good financial decisions.

Create and maintain boundaries with my co-parents and their families that were beneficial to my children.

Develop a sense of independence so that I could govern my family.
​
For years, I have served as a useful source to those seeking inspiration, help, or advice. I finally decided to own that role and be intentional about it. I started writing about my passions, my thoughts, and curious wonderings about our world. I founded Complicated Single Mom with a mission to give others a taste of what goes on in my mind, and I have been at it ever since.
I've made it my personal mission to help single parents strategize their future.

Not too long ago, words like "financial freedom" and "wealth-building" were foreign to me. I had several degrees and STILL had to work two jobs. I thrived on "struggling" and although I had the information to do better, I have no idea how to execute!
For years, I remembered watching my friends buy houses and go on vacations, and I would be working those 100 hour weeks and running on very little sleep. Although I was happy for my friends and I celebrated their wins, a small part of me asked "why can't that be me?" I knew how to make a dollar "stretch", but I had no idea how to make a dollar "work" for me.

When I got tired of robbing Peter to pay Paul, I decided to take a massive leap of faith and learn more about finances. After years of studying and applying concepts that I thought were only for the rich, I changed my financial mindset. I stopped asking myself how I would manage my family on one income. I challenged myself to stop limiting my beliefs about attaining good credit, purchasing a home, or creating generational wealth. I made a five-year plan to empower myself financially and build wealth for my family - But I had to start from scratch! I changed my habits and honestly looked at the financial prison I'd created for myself and my family.
Now that I've better positioned myself, I want to help others attain financial autonomy!
